Almost every day we went visiting and picnicing on islands in the 1,000 Islands area where Parks Canada has many really nice teeny island parks. There are small docks for visitors to these park islands so Jim took us there in his runabout boat. We have been calling this one "Shuman Island" just because we have gone there frequently. We usually have it all to ourselves.
This is the picnic table on Shuman Island and it's on the side of the island that is right on the shiping channel.
When ships in the channel pass, they go inbetween Shuman Island and the island across the channel. The small white spot you see in the middle of the picture is a 40 ft. motor yacht in the channel.
Now here's the exact same picture with the next ship to come through the channel. Jim thinks it's likely 740 ft. long because the locks are 750 ft. long and they completely fill up the lock. When these leviathons went by near where Kathy and I were anchored, it would definitely rock the boat even though the channel was almost half a mile away. Luckily, there seemed to be none passing us at night, possibly because they didn't want to navigate the nearby "narrows" at night. However, there was usually one passing by bright and early by 6 AM.
We'll be leaving tomorrow for Canada, thanking Jim and Laurie for being such good hosts.
