We cruised here yesterday from Saint Simons Island outside in the Atlantic because of many reports of shallow spots in the ICW between St. Simons and Savannah. We could not leave on a 1/2 rising tide to take advantage of the 6 ft. tides to cover the shoals because high tide was about sunrise and we won't leave before sunrise. However, some friends of ours, Bill & Jane Stone did do the inside passage through the shallow spots, leaving St. Simons at high tide and made it with no problems. I still wanted to go outside, even though waves were 3 to 4 ft. all the way for about 4 hours in the ocean. In the picture above, we were about 6 miles offshore and the land is a this grey line on the horizon.
Daisy doesn't like it when the boat rocks in waves and she creeps around like a fool looking for comfort, so Kathy likes to sit with her on the sofa to keep her happy. This is one spoiled dog, but we love her.
Kathy's sister Larry and Julie Elliot (Kathy's sister) came from Texas and met us at the Thunderbolt Marina where we're staying. We'll see the sights in Savannah together.
Today, we went to visit Fort Pulaski which is a National Monument, run by the National Park Service here. It was first built between 1829 and 1847 byu the U.S. government. It was used by the Confederacy in the Civil War and recaptured by the Union Army here in 1862 after the walls were breached by 30 hours of bombardment with long range union cannons.
The fort still has a large number of Civil War cannons and the only existing very large cannon moving carriage from the period. The fort was restored by the Union Army after the Civil War and is still in excellent condition today. The Park Service and some voulnteers, dressed in Union or Confederate garb fire a cannon and Civil War rifles as a demonstration for the visitors.
The 4 of us kind of stumbled across the Johnny Harris Restaurant, well known locally for it's barbeque. It turned out to be a very good BBQ joint, so thanks for the lunch, Larry & Julie! We'll be in Savannah for about 6 days before we move on up into South Carolina.
